 解放戰爭時期，12歲的連福和他心愛的小紅馬，被父親送到解放軍騎兵部隊，當上一名小騎兵。一年夏天，一次夜間急行軍中，大雨瓢潑，小紅馬馱著昏昏欲睡的連福走在隊伍后邊。突然，他一頭栽下馬來，在雨中進入了夢鄉。當他被馬嘶聲驚醒，發現一伙敵軍騎兵向他沖來。危急之中，一位過路的農婦舉槍阻擊，使連福脫身而去。連福追到宿營地，他意外地發現，剛才救自己的竟是部隊的王股長。王股長拿出一雙靴子送給連福，并要認他做干兒子。不久，王股長化裝執行任務，借走了連福的小紅馬。幾天后，受重傷的馬回來了，人卻未歸。部隊要出發了，小紅馬因傷勢過重，留在了荒無人煙的野地。連福離開同自己一起長大的馬，非常想念，連日夢見與小紅馬一起歡笑、玩耍。終于，為尋找心愛的小紅馬，他只身離開部隊。經過長途跋涉，連福在荒草甸上找到了骨瘦如些的小紅馬，但又遇上了土匪。土匪魯二和尚認出了連福是自己把兄弟的兒子，并講出了連福從來不知的父親是盜馬賊的事情。第二天，連福偷偷騎上小戲馬，逃回家找父親算帳去了。父親講述了自己在解放軍的教育下，從一個盜馬賊轉變為憑手藝吃飯的鐵匠的經過。父親還告訴他，正是為了不讓他重走自己的路，才把他送到部隊上。連福明白了，更加思念部隊。父親又一次送他上路。在歸隊的路上，又碰上了老謀深算的敵團長。他搶走了小紅馬，并強迫連福馬馬倌。在敵團部，連福突然發現了身負重傷的王股長，王股長已被折磨得遍體鱗傷。連福正欲救王股長時，解放軍攻城的炮聲打響。連福乘敵人大亂，急忙救下王股長，并一起追擊敵團長。在搏斗中，王股長第二次掩護了連福，而自己被敵團長擊中，壯烈犧牲。敵團長沒有逃脫死亡下場。連福帶著小紅馬站在王股長的身旁，指導員將鮮紅的戰旗蓋在王股長的遺體上，戰士們鳴槍為烈士致哀，連福發自內心地喊出了："媽媽！……"
