　　鳴海六平（北大路欣也 飾）自幼便癡迷于藝術，如今擔任著佐保美術館館長的職務。鳴海和妻子范子（三田佳子 飾）一個在奈良，一個在東京，過著分居兩地的生活，日子久了，寂寞難耐的范子和家庭醫(yī)生走到了一起。鳴海雖然發(fā)現(xiàn)了妻子的背叛，但為了讓孩子能夠有一個完整的家庭，他選擇忍氣吞聲，報復性的更加埋首于工作之中。　　某日，鳴海造訪陶藝家石本八郎（岡田英次 飾）的住所，就此結識了八郎的女兒多惠（古手川祐子 飾），之后，多惠來到了鳴海所在的美術館打工，一來二去之間，鳴海和多惠產(chǎn)生了背德的感情。

　　World War II is around the corner, but the only thing Sally Bauer can think of is the ocean. Her dream is to swim across the English Channel. Her father has tried to exorcise her obsession with swimming since she was a toddler, without success. An unwanted pregnancy forces her to abandon her dream – and herself. In late August 1939, Sally stands on the shore at Dover and takes her first step into the English Channel. She swims across the open and icy sea for 15 hours, waving to the Navy who are readying for war. A couple of days after Sally swims ashore at Calais, Poland is invaded.
