Following her mother’s death, manga artist Soriya travels to her ancestral home in Phnom Penh, with hopes of reconnecting with her distant family and using the visit as inspiration for her work. All goes well initially. Renting an apartment in Metta, a rundown Khmer Rouge-era housing complex, her visit to her maternal relatives finds her welcomed with open arms. But Soriya’s waking hours in the apartment and its surroundings are punctuated by terrifying, bloody visions, almost as though she were a conduit for horrors of the past wanting to seep into the present. Inrasothythep Neth and Sokyou Chea’s blood-chilling psychological horror explores a personal and political past through the present, transforming a characterful space into an insidious environment. Surrounded by modern high-rises, this decrepit structure, with its brutalist architecture and peeling surfaces, is a relic from a dark period in history whose painful memories it has absorbed. In tracing Soriya’s ominous journey back to her roots, Tenement hints at a necessary reckoning with Cambodia’s political past without overplaying its historical dimension. It’s an impressive work from a woefully underrepresented national cinema.

2003年，福岡市的一所市立小學(xué)，發(fā)生了一起老師欺凌學(xué)生的惡性事件。一名男性教師以種族歧視為由，對“有美國人血統(tǒng)”的四年級學(xué)生處處找碴，施行惡毒的語言暴力和殘酷的體罰。該學(xué)生的家長對教師提起民事訴訟，550名律師自發(fā)組成原告律師團。福岡市教育委員會也對教師做出了停職處罰。行為如此惡劣的教師堪稱罕見，經(jīng)《周刊文春》《朝日新聞》等主流媒體報導(dǎo)，引起軒然大波，涉案教師被冠上“史上最惡劣的‘殺人教師’”的名號；但欺凌事件真的發(fā)生了嗎？隨著調(diào)查的深入，事件發(fā)生了驚人的逆轉(zhuǎn)…… 影片改編自記者福田真澄2007年出版的一本書，名為《捏造：福岡“殺人老師”的真相》。
