Following her mother’s death, manga artist Soriya travels to her ancestral home in Phnom Penh, with hopes of reconnecting with her distant family and using the visit as inspiration for her work. All goes well initially. Renting an apartment in Metta, a rundown Khmer Rouge-era housing complex, her visit to her maternal relatives finds her welcomed with open arms. But Soriya’s waking hours in the apartment and its surroundings are punctuated by terrifying, bloody visions, almost as though she were a conduit for horrors of the past wanting to seep into the present. Inrasothythep Neth and Sokyou Chea’s blood-chilling psychological horror explores a personal and political past through the present, transforming a characterful space into an insidious environment. Surrounded by modern high-rises, this decrepit structure, with its brutalist architecture and peeling surfaces, is a relic from a dark period in history whose painful memories it has absorbed. In tracing Soriya’s ominous journey back to her roots, Tenement hints at a necessary reckoning with Cambodia’s political past without overplaying its historical dimension. It’s an impressive work from a woefully underrepresented national cinema.
一江春水向東流
一九三零年代的上海順和紗廠，女工素芬（白楊 飾）與婦女補習學校教員張忠良（陶金 飾）喜結連理。 一九三七年七月七日，素芬誕下一子。忠良為子取名抗生后不久，便加入救護隊離開上海，并機智地在南京大屠殺中幸存下來。 一九三八年，忠良母（吳茵 飾）帶素芬和抗生回到丹陽鄉下。但是鄉下也不太平，忠良弟忠民（高正 飾）不肯做走狗，上山打起了游擊。 一九四零年，侵略者吊死了忠良父。素芬只得背子隨婆回到上海，以對忠良的思念和期盼為支撐，在苦難中掙扎求生。 一九四一年，被俘后成功逃脫的忠良輾轉到達重慶，困苦中只得投靠故交王麗珍（舒繡文 飾），并慢慢被墮落的物質生活所引誘，開始迷失自己。 一九四五年，日本投降，忠良和麗珍先后回到上海，住進麗珍表姐何文艷（上官云珠 飾）家。就在忠良與文艷廝混時，走投無路的素芬歪打正著被招入文艷家幫傭……
