約翰．卡彭特導(dǎo)演的這部科幻片并沒有強(qiáng)調(diào)特技噱頭，反而將重心放在異鄉(xiāng)人的主題上，而且拍出了相當(dāng)浪漫動(dòng)人的氣氛，甚至可以將它當(dāng)作一部取外星人為主角的文藝片來欣賞。杰夫．布里奇斯飾演一名純真的外星人，他的宇宙飛船被地救人擊落，掉在威斯康辛州的荒野。他負(fù)傷來到新近喪偶的寡婦凱倫艾的家中，并且借用她丈夫的身體來延續(xù)生命。在學(xué)習(xí)地球人的生活方式過程中，他跟寡婦發(fā)生了感情。外星人的救援隊(duì)將在三天后到達(dá)亞歷桑納州接他回外層空間，他需要寡婦開車送他到那里。地球上的兩位政府官員也接獲訊息，他們決定不管生死都要捉住外星人，因而引發(fā)了一場(chǎng)精彩的拉鋸戰(zhàn)。
