 這是一部取材于真人真事的現(xiàn)代警匪片，影片塑造了一個真實(shí)可信、可敬可親的當(dāng)代人民警察的光輝形象。彭寶林——1987年退伍，后任惠陽縣工商銀行經(jīng)濟(jì)警察，1991年主動要求調(diào)入惠陽縣老街派出所任民警。彭寶林在工作中時時處處嚴(yán)于律己，愛護(hù)群眾。1993年5月14日，在執(zhí)行任務(wù)中，彭寶林突遇藏匿的通緝犯香港黑社會頭目區(qū)耀煌。悍匪脅迫人質(zhì)，持槍拒捕，彭寶林不顧自己身負(fù)重傷，與頑匪展開激戰(zhàn)，并將悍匪擊斃。而彭寶林最終因搶救無效，壯烈殉職，他以自己的青春熱血為當(dāng)代人民警察樹立了光輝的榜樣。中華人民共和國公安部追授彭寶林全國一級英雄模范稱號。該片獲得1994年中國電影華表獎優(yōu)秀故事片獎；1995年第15屆金雞獎最佳故事片獎。
